Getting a modular kitchen right the first time
The layout follows the room, not the catalogue
Kitchen layouts are chosen far too often from a brochure and far too rarely from the room's actual shape and the position of the drainage and gas line. Start with three fixed points — where water leaves, where gas enters, and where the window is — and build the layout around them. An L-shape suits most compact Tirupati flats. A parallel layout works in a long narrow kitchen, but only if there is enough floor width between the two runs for a drawer to open fully while someone stands at the other counter.
What the carcass is made of matters more than the shutter
The box behind every cabinet lives closest to the water and the steam, and it is the one part you cannot upgrade later without dismantling the kitchen. Moisture-resistant board is not an upsell in a warm, humid region — it is the difference between a kitchen at ten years and a kitchen at four. The shutter, by contrast, is the visible layer and the easiest thing on earth to change later. If something has to give, give on the shutter finish.
Plan for how Indian cooking actually behaves
Heavy tempering, deep frying and long simmering produce far more oil-laden steam than most kitchen designs account for.
- Real extraction at the right mounting height — a powerful chimney hung too high underperforms a modest one hung correctly.
- A wipeable backsplash with as few grout lines as possible behind the hob.
- Deep drawers rather than shelves below the counter, so heavy vessels slide out instead of being reached into.
- A dedicated tall unit for bulk grains and pulses, kept away from the heat.
- Counter-level sockets for the mixer, kettle and toaster, so no appliance runs off a trailing wire.
Measure the people, not just the room
Counter height is treated as a standard and it should not be. Set it so the person who cooks most can work with straight wrists and without stooping — for many people that is slightly lower than the default. Keep the daily-use band between knee and shoulder height, and put the twice-a-year items in the loft. Leave enough gap between counter and wall units to use the back of the counter comfortably. These are small dimensions on a drawing and they decide whether a kitchen is pleasant for the next ten years.
