What makes a bedroom restful
Get the light right, then everything else
A bedroom is the one room where lighting is a health decision as much as an aesthetic one. Avoid a single bright ceiling light as the only source. Use a soft ambient layer, a warm bedside light each side that can be reached without getting up, and if you read in bed a focused light that does not spill onto the other pillow. Keep the colour temperature warm — around 2700 to 3000K — and put the layers on separate switches. On the window, a blackout layer plus a sheer layer gives you a dark room at night and soft daylight in the morning.
Wardrobe planning is bedroom planning
The wardrobe is the largest object in most bedrooms and it decides how the room feels. Run it floor to ceiling and wall to wall where you can — a continuous plane reads calmer than a freestanding box with dead gaps around it. Sliding shutters save the swing space in tight rooms; hinged shutters give you the full opening and better internal access where there is room for them. Inside, plan for what you own: hanging height for long and short garments, drawers for folded clothes, a loft for luggage and seasonal bedding, and a light that comes on when the door opens.
Clearances that decide whether the room works
Bedrooms are unforgiving of a few inches in the wrong place.
- About two feet of clear space along the sides of the bed you get in and out from.
- Around three feet in front of a wardrobe so the shutters open fully and you can stand there.
- A bedside surface at roughly mattress height, with a socket beside it.
- Clear swing for the room door and the bathroom door, with neither hitting the bed.
- Space to make the bed from both sides without moving furniture.
Keep the fixed layer calm and the soft layer expressive
The parts you cannot easily change — wardrobe finish, wall colour, ceiling, flooring — should stay quiet and warm. Put personality into bedding, cushions, curtains, a rug and art, all of which can be replaced in an afternoon when your taste shifts. This is also the practical answer for children's rooms: a neutral fixed layer that survives from age four to age fourteen, with the character carried by things that are easy to swap.
